UFO-like Buzludzha Monument in Bulgaria

Photographer Timothy Allen shot some incredible photos of the UFO-like Buzludzha monument  in Bulgaria. The monument and the landscape look  like a perfect scene for a science fiction horror movie—I’m thinking “The Thing.” Allen visited Bulgaria during the worst winter the country experienced in many years.

Buzludzha monument is located in a historical peak in Central Stara Planina, a mountain in Bulgaria. It opened in 1981 on the 1300th anniversary of the founding of Bulgaria. It was designed by architect Georgy Stoilov and built by order of Bulgarian communist regime to commemorate the anniversary and the founding of the Bulgarian communist party. More than 6000 workers, units of the Bulgarian Army and artists, were involved in building and decorating the monument. Construction took seven years.

After the fall of communism in Bulgaria, the monument was abruptly abandoned. Last year the Bulgarian government gave away the Buzludzha monument to the Bulgarian Socialist Party. Visit Timothy Allen’s website for more photos and information about his trip.
